The island country of Sri Lanka has diverse topography which leads to its many offerings in spices, fruits and vegetables. Apart from the diversity in cuisine and food preparations, there are plenty of fruits available all year round to satiate the hunger for freshness, flavour, texture and wholesomeness.
Seasonal Fruits- Available from April to June
This tropical land offers some delicious varieties of Mango. Beginning from April, one can spot Mango in the northern parts of the country. the Karthakolomban (or Jaffna) mango is rich in texture and juicy flavour. It is found in dry parts of the country and are also readily available in popular cities across the land. Rambutans, a hairy red fruits, is native to South-East Asia but is commonly found in Sri Lanka around the month of June. They are easily available in roadside stalls and local markets around this time.
Seasonal Fruits- July to September
Durian, a uniquely fragrant tropical fruit, is found in the months of July to September in Sri Lanka. This yellow spiky fruit has a sweet, custard like taste and a strong smell. Mangosteens, purple fruit with white soft fleshy pulp, are readily available in Sri Lanka. This fruit is high on nutrition but cannot be carried back home. So enjoy them while in the harvesting tropical lands.
Year round fruits
Papaya has high consumption as a breakfast fruit in Sri Lanka and can be found any time of the year in local markets. Sri Lanka also offers close of 20 varieties of bananas. Another favorite tropical fruit, pineapple, is available all the year round in this country.
