Tourist attractions in Agra
Most famous as the city of the Taj Mahal, Agra is one of the most travelled destinations in the world. People from across the globe come here for the food, history and of course, one of the wonders of the world. Just a short trip from Delhi, it is an easy visit and easy to explore place with a lot to offer from ancient India. This is one of the places where you can clearly see the influence of the Mughals, their rule and architecture.
Taj Mahal
If you are visiting Agra, the Taj Mahal is a no-brainer. To be at this well loved and historic site is something that everyone dreams of. You can stare endlessly at the architecture of this wonder and gaze across the banks of the Yamuna as the mist creeps in. However you want to enjoy this lovely piece of architecture, it is a great idea to strike it off your bucket list.
Agra Fort
Aside from the Taj Mahal, there is the Agra Fort, a place of immense historic value. This 94 acre premises is one of the most frequently visited destinations of the city and is famous for its four gates which have been influenced by both Hindu and Mughal artistic styles. The four gates are the Khizri Gate, Lahore Gate, Amar Singh Gate and the Delhi Gate, each pointing in a different direction. You can visit the fort between 6AM and 6PM everyday.
Fatehpur Sikri – The Sandstone City
One of Akbar’s monumental achievements, this city was built with a unique architectural style that borrowed from Islamic, Hindu and Jain styles of architecture. The red sandstone used in the construction of the city gives it a unique look and feel. The sandstone city is a couple of hours drive away from Agra, but it is a must visit once you are done with the Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal.
